Fall 2016: Applying to Kindergarten / Elementary School

school-kids

Time to apply Kindergarten!  (or other elementary grades.)

The application period runs from Oct 3 – December 9 2016 for the 2017/18 school year.  If your child will be 5 by

CPS Office of Access and Enrollment has a nice new site that has all the information you’ll need to apply to Selective Elem programs, Magnets, and Neighborhood schools with open enrollment.

In BIG news this year, notification letters will be posted ONLINE (instead of by mail) if you apply online.

Also, the selective elem schools will still offer early testing.  If your child tests between November 1st and November 17th, you will receive your child’s test scores before the application deadline.  (And this gives you some knowledge of their scores as input for choosing/ranking your schools.)

If you like a lot of detailed information in one place, I found this power point deck to be very comprehensive:

New Decatur web site

A reader sent me the link to a fine-lookin’ new web site for Decatur so I thought I’d share it.   This is one nice CPS site. Gives Nettelhorst a run for their money.  Which reminds me, I am going to work on a post about the marketing aspect of CPS schools, a topic that fascinates me.

http://www.decaturclassical.org/

Wouldn’t it be fun to have an awards show for the schools with things like:
Best Web Site

Best Brochures

Best Overall Marketing Efforts

Best P.R.

Best rehab of a hideous space in a school building

Most attractive use of outside signage

Most clever events to get prospective parents into the school building

Best use of message boards to create buzz

Most inspiring school tour (category for Principal and Parent)

Best table display at NPN school fair

In any case, despite the humor, a big THANK YOU to all the parents who pitch in to make things like this in CPS happen.  It takes a lot of work and free time (often late at night) to keep the momentum going and convincing new parents that CPS can be a good option for their kids.

Learn the ABC’s of CPS in person

If you are just navigating the waters of CPS or if you want to discuss something in person with a knowledgeable resource, you can attend one of the following sessions at Sulzer Library (4455 N. Lincoln.)  Ellen Lourden from CPS will be there to talk about the process and answer questions. She is a master at answering the nit-pickiest questions about lotteries.

Saturday, March 14 9:00 – 10:30 am

Tuesday, March 24, 10:00 – 11:00 am

Tuesday, March 31, 7:00 – 8:00 pm

No need to register.
