CPSO Update (and a PSA)

January 19, 2015 at 1:44 pm 43 comments

Hi CPSO readers.  I will be out of commission for a bit.  My mom was hospitalized this week; after being sick for several weeks with a cough and what we thought was the flu, an infection spread to her brain requiring emergency surgery.   The doctors say the prognosis is pretty good for a return to normal and to normal cognitive functioning.  Right now it’s hard to see that happening as it feels like a long way to progress.   But I’m remaining hopeful.

I’ll be sure to make posts as we get closer to the key upcoming dates for test scores etc, but not sure how much I will post before that time.   If anyone has news or articles that would be worth posting, feel free to email me and I can put stuff up to keep the conversation going.  And PLEASE keep the conversation going.  Though I’m not contributing, I’m still reading all the posts as a diversion.

And finally a PSA: I’ve learned that all “regular” winter illnesses like flu and particularly pneumonia can affect older people much more significantly.  If you have a sick parent, please be sure to stay on top of their medical care and get them to a doctor (and/or get a 2nd opinion) rather than waiting it out or waiting for your parent to ask you to help.

Hopefully I will be back soon to continue the obsessing.

Yes, CPSO–family first! We all understand! With a daughter like you I know she will recover fast!
Here is news about the PARCC from catalyst–I didn’t know that CPS would only be testing 10% of students this year.

Best wishes to your mother. She is fortunate to have your care.

It seems disrespectful to comment on the 2015-16 CPS schedule here. But I shall anyway, as you instructed us to continue the conversation.

Ack! Late start. Late end to 2nd quarter (February!). Late last day of school.

  • 17. cpsobsessed  |  January 19, 2015 at 8:57 pm

Thank you everyone, I greatly appreciate the kind and positive thoughts.

No worries about posting cps stuff here. I’ll try to make another post for “current news” later tonight if people feel more comfortable posting there.

    Thanks again.

And yet again, there is the week in November with Veteran’s Day on a Wednesday, an attendance day on Thursday and in-service day on Friday. Why not turn this week into a fall break?

  • 31. Chris  |  January 22, 2015 at 1:19 pm

“Why not turn this week into a fall break?”

Because that would leave November with basically 5 useful instructional days (the first week–bc conferences kill the following week, and TG kills the 4th week) AND have the last scheduled day of attendance June 24.

It’s a stupid choice to have it then–should be day after conference day, and have all conferences (El and Hi) on the same day.

  • 32. CPS teacher & mom  |  January 23, 2015 at 2:35 pm

I agree that the in-service day could be moved to solve the problem. However, there is no need to move the end date to June 24th, you could return to school earlier in August like the rest of the world. So basically instead of “five useful instructional days”, we are up to 8? That is if you could a week with a Wednesday holiday and a Friday in-service day useful?

  • 33. momof3boys  |  January 23, 2015 at 2:49 pm

    Hoping for a speedy recovery!
same thing with my mom. not the brain thing. kidney. but she had the “flu” while she was with me for a week. she’s been out of commission for almost a month.

  • 34. Chris  |  January 23, 2015 at 3:38 pm

“you could return to school earlier in August like the rest of the world”

Virginia state law is ‘after Labor Day’. So are Minnesota and Michigan.

“Iowa’s public schools will be unable to start next school year before Aug. 31 unless they gain approval from the state’s Department of Education” Des Moines Register, 12/12/14.

Wisconsin and North Carolina also require 9/1 starts.

Anyway, I’d be perfectly happy with starting the Monday prior to Labor Day, every year, whether that’s as early as August 25, or as late as August 31. I think that having the three day weekend after the first week softens the return to school a bit.

But this is something that no matter what, 1/3 of the people will be mad about (1/3 don’t really care).

  • 35. IB Obsessed  |  January 23, 2015 at 6:05 pm

Indiana schools start well before Labor Day, at lease in central IN. Didn’t know 1st day of school is typically governed by state law.

Sorry to hear about your mom. Remember that when you feel the most helpless, there is a God of all help.

  • 39. Stacy  |  February 16, 2015 at 4:00 pm

I’m sorry to hear about your mom. I also hate to post here, but does anyone know when the RTL applications are due? And what locations will be collecting them?

  • 40. Jen  |  February 16, 2015 at 9:37 pm

@39 it looks like cps hasn’t even updated this application info for 2015-16. This page still shows 2014-15. The same thing happened last year, and the deadline was something like early May.

  • 41. Jen K  |  February 16, 2015 at 10:21 pm

But wait! If you go to cpsoae.org instead of cps.edu, there is this updated link showing applications start March 2nd.

    Click to access Ready%20to%20Learn%20Flyer_2015-2016.pdf

Also, it says what documents to bring to the application sites, but does not actually list the application sites. Good luck!

CPSO- sending good thoughts your family’s way!

Regarding the calendar- when will CPS get smart and add optional snow/weather days that can be removed if not used at the end of the year? In the northeast this is standard, then there are very few sudden attendance days (like the recent 1/30) people know they may be in school until a fixed date and plan no vacations before that day.

And regarding the start- I am in the after Labor Day camp! I thought I would not care, and I hated it! I love being here in the city when all the suburbs are back to school- feels special, like the city is finally ours to play in.
