Mayoral Forum on Education

Ok, break is winding down, back to obsessing….

The Raise Your Hand Group will be hosting a forum where the candidates for Mayor can give their opinions and ideas for dealing with our school system.  How does the mayor impact our schools?  Well for one, the new mayor will likely hire the next person to lead CPS.  Does this matter?  God, I hope so.  I have to believe that getting the right person in there can help improve things a bit, but then again, why are the Chicago, NYC, LA, and DC schools all still floundering if it were that easy?

Does the mayor impact any funding for CPS?  Hm… I don’t know that they necessarily do.  I know there’s been pressure on Daley to funnel some TIF money (money that is allocated to specific neighborhoods) back into CPS.  But that’s not par-for-the course.

In any case, some good idea certainly can’t hurt and at the very least, we’d want a mayor who plans to make education improvement a priority to the extent that they can.

Seat is limited and a webcast will be available.

As a note, the one key candidate who will not be in attendance is Rahm Emmanuel, who was “otherwise engaged” (although RYH says they offered to work with his schedule.)  Rahm, you better not be planning to watch from home on webcast in your underwear so you can hear what the other candidates are saying before you have to speak to the public about it!

Elect Board members (especially President and top brass).

Too bad Rahm has already confirmed that he is NOT attending. Is he too busy flying to California to raise funds that day?

I for one, am troubled by the reporting that Rahm wants to totally change and standardize the math and reading curriculum throughout CPS.

Sounds like an uneducated soundbite right out of the gate. I’d have to hear a lot more about what data this piece of public policy is based on in order to give his candidacy consideration.

    Legislators, educate thyselves.

I agree, Jill. There is absolutely NO reason to change the curriculum. Of all the things to change, that is the stupidest.

What do you think?
