That’s interesting. I called earlier this week and OAE told me the letters were going out today. I bet if we call Monday, they’ll say something else.

I don’t even think the principals are aware because one of them is planning a parent visit next week for families who got into their school. The GEAP office should at least have the decency to let them know what is up so they can plan accordingly.

Not a bit surprising. I guess they enjoy watching me stalk my mail carrier.

welcome to CPS, get used to it.

  • 5. LR  |  March 22, 2010 at 10:02 am

Just called at 10am this morning. Talked to someone who told me I should have my letter by the end of the week.

  • 6. KS  |  March 22, 2010 at 10:02 am

Just called the OAE …now they are saying you should have the letters by the end of the week. But they will not say when they are going out or how long you will have to respond to the letter, should you receive a placement. Hopefully someone else can get a more informative scope….

    Thanks for the info guys.
Perhaps if they put the info on the WEB SITE, the whole world wouldn’t need to call!!! Just sayin’…..
Well people, let us wait patiently a few more days and hopefully b Friday we will all have some news.

  • 8. Lottery based magnet schools  |  March 22, 2010 at 10:39 am

Just wondering if anyone has received letters from any of the lottery-based magnet schools (Hawthorne, Stone, Thorpe, etc). So far, I haven’t received any letters, and I sent out about 20 applications.

It would be great if folks could post as they receive letters in the mail.

    Good luck to all!

  • 9. cpsobsessed  |  March 22, 2010 at 10:44 am

From what I’ve read on NPN, I don’t think any magnet letters have been received. The only school I saw so far was Hamilton’s kindergarten. Stay tuned!…..

  • 10. Chicagomom2  |  March 22, 2010 at 11:47 am

Don’t you find it interesting that there all of sudden a “delay”? It’s a computerized lottery, right? Maybe they are not happy with the “results”?

  • 11. Lottery based magnet schools  |  March 22, 2010 at 11:51 am

Just received in today’s mail Franklin Fine Arts (waitlisted) and Disney II (waitlisted #103). Just wondering if they’ll waitlist everyone with the craziness of admissions this year.

  • 12. Lottery based magnet schools  |  March 22, 2010 at 12:00 pm

My letters both stated: “You should be aware that the Chicago Public Schools utilize a computerized lottery program that randomly ranks the applicants for each grade and assigns a number to all students not selected for an available space. Selected students will have until April 16, 2010 to accept or decline the offered space. After that date, we will begin to contact students from the waiting list to fill any remaining spaces. There is no way to predict how many — if any — students will be contacted from the waiting list.”

Disney II letters came in the mail today.

Thank you for the updates! Trying to be patient here… 🙂

  • 15. Marrs96  |  March 22, 2010 at 2:49 pm

We received Disney & Franklin today.

  • 16. MomtoAKJ  |  March 22, 2010 at 3:41 pm

Anyone know how far down on these waitlists the magnets typically go? We just got the Disney II letter and we are in the 20’s. Considering there are probably 56 spots that would be a lot of turnover to get to us…. just wondering if anyone had any idea of our chances.

  • 17. Coonley Mom  |  March 22, 2010 at 4:41 pm

My kindergarten son was 84 on the waiting list at Disney II, so they go down pretty far.
I think it is so hard to know about waiting lists (unless of course you are #84, then it is pretty clear you will not be attending Disney II:) There are just so many things that can happen:
    1. If CPS puts 37 students in every class, then they will automatically start calling people on the waiting list b/c they will have 74 spots instead of 56.
    2. If CPS gets rid of busing for all Magnet, Gifted, Classical, then parents who accept offers, may eventually have to decline, which will give more students on the waiting list a chance.
The unknown is when CPS will decide about busing, and then when will they let parents know about busing. Summer could be full of chaos. Good luck with all the madness!

Franklin wait list for kid #1, but nothing from them on kid #2.

@ momtoakj: not sure. it depends on if an accepted kid to franklin declines now or later on or the same w/ the wait list kids above your child. I would say call the school in a few weeks and ask if your child has moved up on the list. Friends at other schools have called to get a status update. One got in. (I can’t remember how low they were on the list)

  • 19. Miasmom  |  March 22, 2010 at 5:13 pm

We recieved Disney, Disney II, LaSalle II, and Franklin today, all waitlist. Best # was 27 at Disney II, and like a previous poster said that would take a heck of alot of turnover to get to us. This is depressing.

  • 20. Kathryn Pierce  |  March 22, 2010 at 6:09 pm

We received letters from LaSalle II, Disney II and Franklin today.

  • 21. SS Mom  |  March 22, 2010 at 6:22 pm

Also got Disney back today, it says we’re on the waiting list, but there is no number. Does that pretty much mean were WAAAYY up there? Anybody get a waiting list number from Disney?

  • 22. anxious  |  March 22, 2010 at 6:25 pm

Got the rejection letter from Mark Sheridan today, containing four grievous misspellings. Sigh.

  • 23. not so hopeful anymore  |  March 22, 2010 at 6:33 pm

We got Disney I and II, Lasalle I and Franklin today.

For turnover, I would think that anything much higher than 5 in the really popular schools won’t be called, and in the less popular schools you might have a chance up to 20.
If it helps, last year, Ravenswood called us mid summer and we were in the 70’s, and Waters called us 3 weeks into the school year (we were #5 I think). Sometimes schools have to open up an additional kindergarten and that can mean a better shot for those on the waiting list. (usually just neighborhood schools)
Though, this fall, if class sizes have to be increased to close to 40, schools may have to call more people on the wait list….and since the budget decision isn’t made until August at the earliest it could be a long wait.

  • 24. K's Dad  |  March 22, 2010 at 6:46 pm

Talked to Theresa at OAE (773-553-2060). Same answer as KS above. They said we should receive the letters by the end of the week. She didn’t know about the magnet schools. She said it was up to the schools.

  • 25. cpsobsessed  |  March 22, 2010 at 9:40 pm

At some of the magnets, I’d say a number in the 20’s is pretty decent. Keep in mind that many people apply to a TON of magnet schools, even those far from their homes. Some find out they’re too far for bussing, they decide they don’t want the bus, they get in elsewhere, stay in the neighborhood, don’t want to split up siblings, etc. So MANY of them will end up bailing.
However I knew someone who was #4 at Hawthorne and didn’t get called (admittedly didn’t follow up either.)
Again, if you’re on the list, make yourself known to the school.

  • 26. cpsobsessed  |  March 22, 2010 at 9:56 pm

Well, if they would just save us all the headaches of the mail and publish the lists online so we can see who got in, it would make things a lot easier! 🙂

  • 27. dave4118  |  March 23, 2010 at 4:55 pm

We got Disney II yesterday, waitlisted at 129…ouch. And we are in the proximity lottery. Also, today, ran into a friend that has two kids at Disney II…he said that it is his understanding that there were only 12 open spots for kindergarten this year. I am assuming that that was due to sibling preference.

  • 28. RFR  |  March 23, 2010 at 9:00 pm

A friend heard from Andrew Jackson today- sibling lottery. We applied general lottery- no letter yet. Really don’t expect to get in either!

  • 29. 2ndtimearound  |  March 25, 2010 at 5:44 pm

A friend of ours got a K sibling spot at Disney too.

Cpsobsessed — how should we let a school know that we are interested? Is this a phone call? An in-person visit? Periodic phone calls? Notes pasted to their door?

What do you think?
