A parent writes….

Just thought I’d update you that Skinner North is offering a SATURDAY 2 hour open house for new Skinner Parents on May 16 to tour the Schiller location-and also a ‘community meeting’ on May 20 at Ogden. Should be interesting!

Subjective Thoughts on Decatur School Assignments – Still Being Worked Through

I get the feeling that when most parents see the building they will be turned off by it. I’ve seen it, and boy does it needs A LOT of work! That’s really too bad because Skinner is still a good school (not as good as it once was, but still a decent school). I hope they did a major overhaul on that place to make a good impression on the parents.

The tour is for the new program. The existing Skinner program is going to the new school and going to be called Skinner West.

If anyone attended the Skinner North open house on 5/16, please share your thoughts. I am very curious…

Skinner north is having a get together for parents at Lincoln park zoo on the 18th of July between 12 noon and 3 pm.
Parents can meet each other and also with the staff and teachers.

My child was denied bussing to Skinner North because we live beyond 6 miles to school. We are left to deal with this problem by ourselves. Think of the snows in the cold winter. We have to get on the bus every day. Somebody suggests carpool. But if an accident happens, who is going to be reponsible. I’ll be very afraid to let my child go with someone I am not sure of his driving skill. I’ll be equally worried if I have to drive someone else’s child for a long ride. They are all babies. Oh, God. Who is going to help us?

Oh, that is sad. Yep, CPS has a 6 mile limit. And I don’t think you can even drive your child into the 6 mile zone either.
I know the car pool thing is hard to fathom right now, but you might feel differently once you get to know these parents and if you really like the school.
From all the friends I have in the suburbs with kids, car-pooling is a regular part of having a kid and is pretty common. I know it’s hard to think about that long trip on a cold, icy day though.
Perhaps you can drive for the first year then think about carpooling next year? I know they seem like babies now but you’ll be surprised how much the kids mature by the end of kindergarten (in terms of having more independence, etc.)
It’s crazy though. I’m sure there is some parent near Skinner who will be hauling up to Decatur every day. Why couldn’t you just switch spots?!
