Providence, RI fired 'em ALL:http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/02/23/national/main20035613.shtml

That said, I don't agree with your "It’s not like there’s a ton of other professions where you can easily transfer your skills, right?" statement (though I love your blog!). Teachers are some of the most highly skilled professionals I know-they think on their feet, are team players, are life long learners, shift gears easily, deal with what they are given, connect with people well, and are, in general, a pretty talented bunch.

That said, we sure do have a mess on our hands, don't we?

Boy, I saw that today. It's shocking, but as the school board pointed out, it is a bit lax that the district let it go on this long.
It's so hard to make tough changes, but there just isn't the money. I'm not sure what the answer is, but I feel really bad for all parties involved out there.

What happens outside of Chicago is very important to my family, since my husband is a suburban teacher and we are making a move to the suburbs as soon as our place sells. We wanted to be closer to his job and to avoid the Chicago high school problem. (even though we are years away from that) Also, as a teacher myself looking for a job, now in the suburbs, I am doubtful I will be able to find anything. The general feeling is that there won't be many jobs at all anywhere in IL for the next few years, until 2014, when a MASSIVE set of retirements is supposed to happen.
Teachers everywhere are watching this mess. We are worried for ourselves and worried for students and families.
